Mechanics in A-Level Maths
Every A-Level Maths student sits mechanics questions in their exams. The topics are:
- Kinematics: motion graphs, the suvat equations, and variable acceleration using calculus
- Forces and Newton’s laws: friction, inclined planes, connected particles and pulleys
- Projectiles
- Moments
Further Mechanics
Further Mechanics is an option in A-Level Further Maths. Depending on the board, it covers topics such as momentum and impulse, work, energy and power, elastic strings and springs, collisions, circular motion and centres of mass. Noah took Further Mechanics and scored 75 out of 75.
How lessons tackle mechanics
Mechanics is about modelling the real world, and most questions get much easier once the set-up is right. Lessons start with a clear diagram: every force marked, directions chosen and the right model picked. Then it’s about resolving carefully, checking units and signs, and setting out working the way the mark scheme rewards.
There’s a worked mechanics question at the top of the home page, marked the way examiners do it.
Who it’s for
- Students who find mechanics confusing, or keep losing marks on it
- Students aiming for an A* who want mechanics to be a strength
- Further Maths students taking the Further Mechanics option
- Physics students who want a firmer grip on the maths behind it
